各カテゴリーごとに性能特性が大きく異なるため、その組み合わせ次第でACは様々な姿へと変貌する。

その性質上、機体の外観に大きく影響を与えるパーツであり、各企業ごとに大きくシルエットが異なるのが特徴であり、直線主体のデザインと曲線主体のデザインのフレームが別々のメーカーから販売されているのがシリーズの常となっている。

[[4シリーズ]]や[[AC6]]ではフレーム一式が同一の型番を持つ「[[標準機体]]」の概念も存在し、兵装や内装を同一企業（系列企業・同盟企業を含む）で統一した機体は俗に「[[企業戦士]]」と呼ばれる。~
逆にプレイヤーや[[独立傭兵]]は企業の縛りがないため、様々なメーカーのフレームや兵装で武装している傾向が強い。
